Journal (7th edition)

TODAY
Out my window: It got coooooooold.  Well, it got cold AFTER it got warm again this past week and I had to actually break some short-sleeve shirts back out for the kids after declaring victory over summer wardrobes last week.  I could hear the rubermaid tubs laughing at me.

Clothing myself in: Pink sweats, college sweatshirt.  I will be changing into something nicer later as we are having a guest for dinner this evening.  Be amazed.

Around the house:  We have accumulated a bunch of nice, educational toys over the years (wooden puzzles, lacing cards, pattern blocks, counting bears, etc. etc. etc.), and I keep them in spots that are put away but easily accessed.  Even so, they don't get used/played with nearly as often as I would like....so this week I started setting a few out on the fireplace each day and switching them out each evening (thanks to the handy-dandy reminder on my phone, see Mary...) and that has worked really well.  The kids have enjoyed it and it has helped encourage me to sit down and spend some time working on things with them.  Win win.  I've also been doing better at rotating toys from the toybox (thanks other Mary!) and that always helps too.  When we play well, we fight less.  All of us.

The baby: Oh my goodness, he is getting so big.  Yesterday I dressed him in a size 12 mos. romper.  He's not really thick but boy is he long!  He is very fascinated with his hands.  His legs are getting stronger, he can semi-support himself when I stand him on my lap.  He is so smiley.  OH I love him.

The kiddos: Gemma hit a wall with her reading lessons this week.  We're about 25 lessons in and they are getting more difficult.  There was frustration, tears, the works, but she didn't want to set it aside and come back to it.  She reminds me so much of me.  SO we suffered through the rest of that lesson, I had a good chat with a fellow mom friend (thanks Michelle!), we took a day off and then yesterday she successfully read a number of pages from Hop on Pop.  We were both very pleased!  I think I'll start splitting the lessons up over two days, and we will rotate between those and reading from "easy readers".  I'm excited, I think she's really going to start taking off with this reading thing.

Kolbe.  I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone who has dropped by our house this past week to find my half naked son running around in all his glory.  He is just doing so stinking well using the potty when he doesn't wear pants, that, well, he just doesn't wear pants anymore.  Oh when we leave the house (like once a week, HA) I do clothe him properly.  And he is doing a little better about not wetting in his underpants and telling us when he has to go (or more likely when he is going) but he by no means totally "gets it".  SO he just doesn't wear pants.

In the kitchen:  Chicken pizza with white sauce and tomatoes from our neighbor's garden; Italian sausage soup; chicken wraps; baked fish, veggies and either couscous or rice (had to nix that one last week); SUSHI!

Crafting:

Learning: Our weekly theme was PUMPKINS!  Click here for some of our books and activities.  The kids also had fun with these (or similar, I couldn't find the exact ones) lacing cards.  Gemma colored and cut out a very huge amount of pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns throughout the course of the week.

Gemma also went to her first storytime by herself at the library.  She did so well, I was really proud of her.  No tears and a huge smile on her face as she skipped off with the line of 3-6 year olds, and an equally huge smile upon returning.  She is super excited to go again, YAY!  My little girl is sure growing up recently, and it makes me a bit sentimental.  Happy, but sentimental never-the-less.

Reading: See last week.  Not much new.  And oh my, I think I am enjoying Little House on the Prairie every bit as much as Gemma is (and that's quite a bit)!

Bringing me joy: My spiritual director gave me a first class relic of St. Gemma Galgani (with certificate of authenticity) to give to our Gemma when she gets older.  He had gotten it at some point when he was traveling in Italy and recently came across it.  Aaron and I were so touched that he thought of our Gemma, what a treasure. ::: Lots of good, quality time with the kids. :::  My phone...we got new phones a little over a month ago but we didn't get data (it was twofold, expense and the fact that we --- or I, Aaron would never use it -- don't need to be that connected, more great stuff on that HERE from my friend Sarah).  Well, I figured out how to download some Catholic podcasts, prayers, and the daily readings and put them on the mp3 player on my phone so I can listen to them in the kitchen while I'm cooking dinner, the kids' room while changing sheets, just anywhere around the house when I am working on mundane activities.  Since the laptop is so hard to haul around (lame, I know).  This really has brought me an insane amount of joy. ::: Our wonderful neighbors.  We seriously have the best neighbors ever...and not just next-door. Everyone around us is just, wow.  Good, good people.  Our next-door neighbors in particular love our kids so much though.  They are about our parents' age and she will often text me to send the kids over for a bit to do this or that.  The kids love it and I can tell "Miss Jo" does too.  It is really a blessing. ::: A nice friend who brought us a meal out of the blue. ::: It has been a good week.

Thinking about: I get out and about with the kids so much less now that we have three.  And it really is fine, I enjoy being home.  Now that winter is approaching, I am thinking about just hibernating here.  Seriously, the thought of getting everyone clothed (Kolbe), socks, shoes, jackets zipped, hoods, blankets, diaper bag packed, etc. sends me into a cold sweat just thinking about it.  I am soooooo not looking forward to winter.

Pictures to share:
Our three beautiful blessings.  Gemma: 4yrs 9 months; Kolbe: 2yrs 9 months; Clement: 3 months.

Pumpkin books

Here are a few pumpkin books we are enjoying this week.

Too Many Pumpkins is the story of Rebecca Estelle and the unruly pumpkin patch that happened upon her and her cat Esmerelda "quite by accident".  Rebecca continually makes the best of unexpected situations throughout the story.  The illustrations are quite cute, the story is cute and well written.  It really was the trifecta of a good picture book!

Patty's Pumpkin Patch is a nice, rhyming story that follows the activities in a pumpkin patch from spring to winter.  While "fiction," it still gave some good, factual information about pumpkins and how they grow.  At the bottom of each page is an alphabet letter that corresponds with an animal, bug or plant in the above illustration, so there are some great options for further discussion/learning on each page.

The kids are also having fun painting/coloring this pumpkin template and painting, cutting and gluing these eyes - noses - mouths.

Journal (6th edition)

TODAY
Out my window: Chilly.  Sunrise.  Love this time of day.

Clothing myself in: Pink sweats that are worn thin and a red sweatshirt, equally (if not more) worn.  I really should care more...

Around the house:  Hmmmmm, uneventful-ish I suppose.  I was in charge of a Respect Life event at our parish that had to be cancelled (presenter had a medical condition and was unable to travel) so I've had DVDs and brochures and stuff I've been trying to get to people.

I think I finally have all the kids' summer clothing out of the closets, AND packed away and organized.  Winter wardrobes are pretty much set, although I think Gemma needs a few more shirts and it is a pipe-dream to think Clem will fit into what he's wearing now all winter...  AHHH clothing, it really just never ends.

The baby: I put him in a pair of sleep-sack jammies that Gemma wore as a baby (yellow duckies, they were gender neutral).  He was very snuggly.  (Switching gears.)  I love how he smacks his lips when he is hungry, it's just like he is talking to me, and he knows I will listen to him.  Sooooo sweet!  Speaking of the little guy, Aaron just brought him out to me...guess our bed got lonely.

The kiddos:  They played together really nicely this week (for the most part).  I am always grateful when this happens, it makes me so glad that they have each other.  On Thursday they had dental appointments (all was well, it was Kolbe's first check!)  They were verrrrrry excited about the prizes they got to pick and bring home.

In the kitchen:  Meatloaf; Quesadillas; Baked Salmon with steamed veggies and some sort of grain (seriously, one of my fave meals); my hubby's homemade chicken noodles; making this fabulous Black Bean Quinoa Salad to take to a family dinner.

Crafting:  Ergh.  Maybe I should just remove this category, since I added several of my own.  I craft in spurts.  This is apparently a dry period...

Learning: Gemma had her first Catechesis of the Good Shepherd class this past week.  I really can't say enough wonderful things about this program.  And Gemma, oh my, she just radiated joy after her first class.  Seriously, I've really never seen her quite like that.  When asked about it by her grandmas, she told them, "it was perfect".  Wow.  Thank you Jesus.

We took a "leaf walk" yesterday, and the kids did some crayon rubbings when we got back. Well, Gemma did.  I think Kolbe tore the paper off a crayon (his latest favorite activity) and scribbled a bit.  I hope we can do another walk in a week or two and get some prettier leaves, we have definitely not hit peak here yet.

Bringing me joy: Beautiful Fall weather and time spent outdoors.  A fresh haircut (about 2.5 inches).  A nice family photo (see below).  Kids who play nicely together.  Time with family, immediate and extended.  A beautiful new nephew and his mama who is doing such a good job with him!  A new battery for the laptop (seriously, absurdly pleased about this, and a bit annoyed that the old one only lasted 2yrs and change...)

Thinking about: How our mornings are going to change soooooooo much next year when Gemma is in school.  Currently the kids get up around 8.  We do fine getting to Mass by 9 on Sundays, but we skip a few things and I really have to "crack the whip" so-to-speak.  As it is, most mornings (since we typically don't have anywhere to go) we have a set routine but we are pretty leisurely with it.  That is all going to change.  A lot.

Pictures to share:
Gemma in her pigtails (new for her) ready for her first night of Catechesis.  I think she was a bit nervous, hence the contrived, overly cheesy smile.

Kolbe put his shoes on all by himself for the first time and was quite proud.

Sleepy Clem.  There is something soooo cute about sleeping children, it just makes me want to take pictures of them.  Aaron says when I look at the (big) kids when they are sleeping it helps me like them again.  ;-D

Family photo from our trip a few weekends ago.  This one just may end up in the Christmas cards.  We'll see what we end up with in the meantime.

Journal (5th edition)

TODAY
Out my window: Rainy and actually fairly warm.  The rain has been nice.

Clothing myself in: Sweats. T-shirt.

Around the house: The continual process of de-cluttering.  I go in bursts where I just feel like I have to get rid of stuff.  Anyone want some...stuff?

The baby: Smiley, talkative.  Goodness, he is such a happy little guy.

The kiddos:  Finally got brave and tried the "no pants" method with Kolbe yesterday to help with the potty thing.  My MIL was over and kindly mentioned that maybe it would be helpful if I got him a longer shirt.  Guess not everyone appreciates a half-naked child running around the driveway.  Hmmmm....  Anyways, his only two accidents happened to be on hard floors, and they were both times when he was mad and throwing a fit.  The rest of the times he would say, "oh, potties go iiiiiiiin toidet," and go back and potty.  Not ready to call this "successful" yet, but I'm just glad it wasn't a nightmare.  Now to find him some longer shirts...I stuck him in his paint shirt (which was already dirty) yesterday...

And Gemma, let's see.  Fairly good week around here.  She is always creating something or having an idea.  It's wonderful, but sometimes it's exhausting.  She also asks lots of questions, especially when I am driving.  She is very curious about why I'm stopping, or turning, or what that sign means, or any number of things she sees or observes.  I do OK with it sometimes, but after awhile (and especially towards the end of the day) it can be a bit wearying. I told Aaron the other night it was kind of like being stoned to death with popcorn.

In the kitchen:  Beef Stroganoff, Chicken Parmesan and Turnips (thanks Vickie!), and Tuna Melts are on the menu so far.  And maybe a homemade pizza.

Crafting:  Nope.  Nothin'.

Learning:  We finished Little House in the Big Woods this week and are ready to start Little House on the Prairie.  Gemma really liked hearing about "Mary and Laura" and is excited there are more of these books to come.  We read them almost exclusively at mealtime (typically when daddy wasn't around), which worked well, otherwise I don't know that Kolbe would have sat through them.  Both kids liked the semi-frequent pictures.  I'd say our first read-aloud was a success, looking forward to more!

Bringing me joy: Knowing that God is in control.  Amazing friends and family.  Rainy weather.  Random baby gifts in the mail from distant relatives.

Thinking about: Surrendering and trusting.  That I am just an instrument and it's God who is in control.  Of everything.  Letting go.

Pictures to share:
I think I'll share several today, since I don't think I'll get to any other blog-posts this week.

Journal (4th edition)

TODAY
Out my window: Dark(ish).  Cloudy.  Coooooooooold.  Fall has come to our neck of the woods for sure.  We have our "winter" bird feeder out on the deck now (as opposed to the hummingbird feeder during summer) and have been enjoying its many visitors.  We sure like our Bird Book.

Clothing myself in: Black sweats.  KU sweatshirt.  My glorified "winter" jammies. It's still early folks.  Just plan on an answer similar to this for the next 6 months or so unless I start blogging at a different time of day.  Then it's debatable.

Around the house: Debating about turning the heater on.  (switching gears) A bit of an increase in our laundry, due in part to the baby and in part to the fact that cool-weather clothes take up more space.  Oh laundry.

The baby: Just now waking up.  Not much new with him, he just hangs out with us and does what we do.  Or sleeps.  He's a "go-with-the-flow" kind of kid.  Boy though, he does not like the wind.  I don't remember that with my other two.  Sometimes I feel sorry for him, his babyhood is so different than Gemma's and even Kolbe's to an extent.  But then, I suppose he will never know any better.

The kiddos: They had a BIG fun week this week.  Several feast days and activities to go along with those.  A trip to the Pumpkin Patch with friends, playgroup at the park, a family trip to the zoo, time outdoors soaking up the last bit of warmer weather (said wistfully, *tear*).  And more fun planned for the weekend.  Hopefully they aren't too "hung over" from all the fun next week.  ;-D

In the kitchen:  Coming up this week are lasagna, tacos, some beef and veggie stew and focaccia bread for my mom's birthday celebration and chile rellenos with some FRESH (frozen) green chiles.

Crafting: The kids and I made beaded Rosaries yesterday for the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, and since October is the month of the Holy Rosary.  That was fun and they turned out really cute.  We will use them in the car I think.

Learning:  (I decided to add this category in order to keep track of some of our preschool activities.  I am enjoying this once-a-week all-in-one-place blogging thing and want to make the most of it. ;-D)  Reading lessons are going well, and we've gotten to the letters part of our handwriting book.  We are doing pretty good at getting a reading lesson a day in, usually while Aaron is home over lunch so that works well.  Handwriting we seem to get to several times a week.  It is a great, ready-to-go activity on days I don't have anything special planned so I am enjoying having that available.  Recently Gemma has really taken an interest at when things are...when is Grandma's birthday?...when are we going to the Pumpkin Patch?...when will it be Fall?, etc. So I printed an October calendar off with the numbers really big, and then wrote simple words or pictures on the days of special activities, or holidays or whatever.  Each evening the calendar goblin (long story, we love goblins around here) crosses another day off and we talk about the date each morning after prayers.  She seems to really like this.

Bringing me joy: My family.  Oh how I love my husband and dear children.  Goodness, all the gratitude in the world isn't enough to express the joy in my heart that my dear little family brings me each and every day.  God is good. Sooo so good.

Thinking about: The Litany of Humility and how it really applies to life.  Often I pray this but then cringe when this "litany" of events happens.  This week it has really hit me, like, "ooohhhhh, this is what I'm praying for."  SO much to ponder.

Pumpkin Patch fun!!

Angel cookies 2012

I had to post a few pics of our angel cookies this year for the Feast of the Guardian Angels.  Gemma was really looking forward to this, it's fun seeing these family traditions evolve as the kids get older...and having kids old enough to look forward to them.  We also had a little mobile craft we did last week that went along with the book Pascual and the Kitchen Angels.  I can't for the life of me find the link for the directions now, but I have the template saved in a Word document if you're interested.  Here are our 2012 angel cookies.  I love Kolbe's proud smile!  I finally found an angel cookie cutter, and borrowed one from my mom as well.  It worked out really well having two this year.  Each kid had their own dough, own cutter, own space.  Happy Feast of the Angels everyone!
