"More"

I think I've mentioned before that Kolbe does really well communicating with the few signs he knows (namely "more", "milk" and "all done").  Here are a couple pictures of him signing "more" (which for him is typically a fist against an open palm instead of the standard two fists).  On the left he is signing for me to swing him more at the park, and on the right (with cousin Anna) for more graham crackers.

He looks like such a big boy in that high chair! Way to go, Kolbe!

I can hardly wait for Second Son to start signing. Some signs make life so much easier with a little one: more, all done, eat, drink.

That's awesome!!
Did you just do the sign yourself to go with whatever you were doing / providing and eventually he caught on?? I understand teaching milk, as in doing the sign before you breastfeed (maybe??) and more when you give more, but I don't quite know how you teach all done. Just take things away and sign all done, and they make the connection?

I didn't do signs with my oldest, but I'd like to do it with Isabelle.
When did you start with Kolbe??

Hey Megan-
First off, I really liked your breastfeeding post. Way to go!! I am a huge advocate for breastfeeding...nothing beats mama's milk.

Regarding the baby sign, it's really never to early to start signing to them, you just sign when you say the word, it's amazing how quickly they pick up on it. Milk is obvious as you said, and "more", I just say would you like more, sign more, and then give him more/do more, whatever. (More seems to be his sign he uses when he doesn't know how to ask for what he wants, too. It's cute. It's like his "go-to") Same with all done, if he starts throwing his food on the floor, I just ask, are you all done, and sign "all done" while I'm saying it. You'd be amazed how quickly they catch on! I think there are several baby sign books at the library. I have this one which uses ASL signs (which are the same signs most people who are deaf use).

GOOD LUCK! Holler if you have any other questions. It really is a helpful tool for communicating when they're too young to talk. I didn't use it a whole lot with Gemma because she talked so early, but am definitely using it more with Kolbe.

I'd love to read more about baby signs. ups/downs? do's/don'ts?
